Where to find huckleberries
If there is one thing I absolutely love it’s huckleberries. Venturing up into the mountains in late summer and spending the day picking berries under a cool canopy of green trees is calming and fulfilling. Eating the berries is the very next best thing.
Huckleberry is the native fruit of North America. The fruit appears in various dark colors such as red, blue and black and each berry measures 5-10mm in diameter. The fruit is completely edible and possesses a unique sweet taste. These berries are used as a major flavoring agent in juice, tea, soup, pudding, pie, pancakes and jam.
The best and most fun way to get huckleberries is to pick your own. They can usually be found in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and even Alaska and northern California. They are also found in some ares in Alberta and British Columbia in Canada. Huckleberries grow exclusively in rich, mid to high elevation forest zones, in shade or semi shady sites.
Health Benefits of Huckleberries
High in vitamin C, Huckleberries protect the body against immune deficiencies, cardiovascular diseases, prenatal health problems, and eye diseases. An excellent source of vitamin A and B, huckleberries are great for promoting a healthy metabolism which in turn helps reduce the risk of stroke. It is also used for treating pain and healing heart disease and infections.
